Description: Duties and Responsibilities
  • To provide effective, efficient and professional intensive care services during contracted sessions as and when required.
  • Share in the ICU on-call roster as determined by the needs of the service. Clinical anaesthesia coverage of the facility is shared on a rostered 24-hour basis by Anaesthetists, backed up by the on-call ICU consultant.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will be aware of the role of patient advocates and patient’s rights and ensure informed consent has been obtained in accordance with hospital policy.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will function as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote high quality outcomes for patients. The Consultant Intensivists will consistently demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with other staff and patients and will handle problems sensitively.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will liaise with medical staff in other departments of the hospital and in other hospitals to ensure that patients are investigated in an appropriate and cost effective manner. This commitment will include taking part in departmental meetings with other disciplines as required from time to time.
  • The Consultant Intensivists, when appropriate, will instruct, guide and supervise the work of other staff involved in anaesthetic/intensive care services as part of regular clinical duties.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will undertake teaching of Anaesthetic Registrars, Technicians and other relevant health professionals as required.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will maintain high standards of clinical performance and foster the maintenance of high standards within the Anaesthetic Department.
  • The Consultant Intensivists with his/her medical colleagues will work to develop and maintain the quality assurance programme and audit programme for the Anaesthetic Department. The programme will include review of patient care, patient diagnosis and standards of treatment.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will regularly review his/her work and that of colleagues as part of this programme.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will work collaboratively toward credentialing and accreditation goals of CBAHI and JCI.
  • The Consultant Intensivists agrees to recognize specific administrative responsibilities within the ICU Department.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will be responsible for ensuring medical and administrative policies within the Anaesthetic Department are adhered to.
  • The Consultant Intensivists, as a major user of resources, will demonstrate responsible and effective use of these resources.
  • The Consultant Intensivists will attend to enquiries and complaints from patients, relatives, staff or management in an appropriate and timely manner, discussing potential problems with the Heads of Department, or as appropriate.
  • Develop a written scope of services for the ICU.
  • Serves on hospital committees as requested.
  • Supervises and trains all resident doctors under Intensive Care Unit Department.
  • Participates in CQIPS system improvement activities, System Control activities, staff development activities.
  • Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.
Education/Licensure:Essential:
  • Graduate from a recognized medical school.
  • Saudi Board or equivalent higher qualification in Critical Care Unit.
  • SCFHS Registration & Accreditation.
Desirable:
  • A higher degree, e.g. an MD or Ph.D. from a recognized university.
  • Instructor status in at least one of ACLS, PALS or ATLS.
  • Level 1 or 2 qualification in ultrasound or echocardiography.
Qualifications:
  • Specialized professional experience in Surgery in recognized centers as follows:
  • Experience and training equivalent to that required for Intensive Care Medicine.
  • Wide experience of intensive care medicine.
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on, and manage, a range of problems in the Critical Care setting.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Ability to deal with complex situations in the core areas of the post.
